As per the plan we wanted to record all the foley sounds first, so each of us watched the video clip a couple of times and tried to pick all the sound effect or samples which we needed to record. While doing this we also started figuring out on where and what sound effect to put which i thought was missing in the actual video clip including some creepy background music. Then again the clip was not from any movie but was one of the film alumni’s project. The samples that we were quite happy where we used different objects to create the sound will be posted online later for others to use.
Some of the recordings were easy like footsteps, bird flapping sound, etc., but few sound needed a little layering and EQ’ing and I think the overall outcome was pretty satisfying. Here are the foley sounds with the little brief.
Squeaky bicycle
It is a horror video clip and the scene is a doll cycling towards the man, so it is obvious that the small cycle will have squeaky sound in the wheels to give that creepy horror feel. The first task was to look around studio for object that made high squeaky sound and then the sound of the wheels. It was pretty easy as we know one common thing for the squeak which is the door, and we had the chair that had small wheels. Now to make sound more like a bicycle we also recorded the sound of the glass table with a steel stands, we placed the mic near to the corners and shook the table to get the mid frequency squeaky sound where we usually get from the pedalling. Then just automated it so that it doesn't sounds like a loop or too constant other then that no other EQ’ing was needed as it sounded great.
Footsteps
This sound was recorded in the studio itself. We used few bricks that were in studio because the man in the video was walking in the streets and in the studio had the wooden floor which wouldn't fit. Later we had to pitch shift as the sound we recorded had more high end as if the person was wearing heels or have really short feet.
Doll singing rhyme
We recorded a Chinese rhyme and pitch shifted to high end then duplicated the track which had it pitched it down. To give more scary effect i added little reverb and delay.
