One of the important things to know before getting into music industry is whether you are interested in producing music or engineering. Even though it seems that there is not much of a difference between these two, one should know what exactly is the role of a producer and an engineer in this field. Both are equally important when it comes to making a great track.
What is the role of an Audio Producer ?
A producers work more on the creative side of the recording session and coming up with new ideas, His responsibilities are more than an engineer. Apart from creative ideas they also need to have a bit of a technical knowledge so they can guide musicians and engineers to achieve a desired sound for the track, oversees the mixing and arranging the tracks. They are considered as managers of the project, they look up the studio to record in, instruments to be played, in which tones, and guides different artist selecting songs to record.
What is the role of an Audio Engineer ?
Audio Engineer is responsible for all the equipments and should have a technical knowledge, good ears and communication skills. Engineers differ from producer as the work is more mechanical rather than creative, like how to connect microphones, setting up the studios, etc. They record and mix the producer’s desired sound with their technical skills and make sure that tracks are free from unwanted sound, to do so they also need to know few DAW software such as pro tools or logic pro.
